Marion Casper-Merk, Germany's secretary of state for drug addiction, visited China from October 9-16, 2004 at the invitation of the Ministry of Health. Ms. Casper-Merk's 6-person delegation accompanied leaders from the Health Ministry's Department of International Cooperation as well as Chen Jue Min, director of Yunnan Province's Department of Public Health, and other leaders on a visit to Daytop's drug treatment and rehabilitation center in Chenggong. After participating in the community's morning meeting, delegates heard an introduction from center director Yang Mao Bin and had an informal discussion with center residents. Ms. Casper-Merk gave a high assessment of Daytop's work and expressed a wish that the governments of China and Germany will strengthen communication and cooperation on the subject of drug abuse treatment and rehabilitation.
