The Integrated Intervention Project was launched in November 2003. The project is committed to reducing drug abuse-related harm among drug users, in particular among injecting drug users, and to increase HIV/AIDS prevention awareness. A series of safe behavior intervention activities is being carried out in communities by trained community outreach peer educators. Some activities are conducted in drop-in centers funded by Futures Group Europe. Major activities include needle exchanges, condom social marketing, skills trainings, psychological counseling, relapse prevention education and organization of Narcotics Anonymous activities. The project has distributed over 15,000 clean needles, with a return rate of over 80 percent, and handed out more than 9,000 condoms. Project activities cover about 3,500 drug users over roughly 1/3 of Kunming. In addition, 20 drug users have been trained as peer educators. The community is now seeing more and more evidence of increased knowledge and safer practices among IDUs.
