The Daytop Red Cross Committee

The Hope Project, which was initiated in October 1989, has organized the government, social groups businesses and individuals to address the problem of school dropouts in China's impoverished regions. However, for various reasons many children still do not have the financial aid they need to attend school. At present the cost for a single student to complete elementary education is around 500 RMB, or around 50 RMB each academic semester. To a child living in the city, 50 RMB may not be enough to eat a single meal, or play games, or buy clothes, but the lack of that 50 RMB will cause countless children in the countryside to grow up ignorant and with no hope of ever breaking out of a life of poverty. Some children living in the countryside cannot buy so much as a single article of suitable clothing in an entire year - being able to attend school is truly their wildest hope. Even though these children live under the same blue sky as their contemporaries, they still cannot share in the sunshine with other children. Here in the relatively impoverished areas of Yunnan, we have many chances to see and hear about the tragic situation of these children. In our hearts we believe that a child being unable to attend school is truly a sin.  To cure poverty we must first cure ignorance. If we do not solve the education problem for these children during this crucial time in their lives for learning and growing, in the future they will not grow into healthy adults, and they will be of no benefit to the strengthening of the people or the development of society; in fact, they will be a threat to social stability. The social problems and lifestyles of vulnerable population groups, including these children, have already begun attracting more and more attention from all social circles. If we don't iron out discrimination and indifference and give these groups greater aid and care, it will only lead to more family and social problems.

The Yunnan Daytop Red Cross Committee was formed in July 2003, with the approval of the Kunming City Red Cross Association, to address situations just such as this. The aim of the committee is to encourage the volunteer spirit, promote volunteer services and provide aid for vulnerable segments of society. Our basic standards are the seven fundamental principles of the International Committee of the Red Cross - humanity, impartiality, independence, neutrality, voluntary service, unity and universality - and we are devoted to the work of the Red Cross, with sincere hearts and our common strength to ease the suffering of vulnerable segments of society, deliver love and mercy, and help in overcoming economic and spiritual difficulties and conquering disease and life challenges, in order to advance mankind and the development of harmony and civilization, and let all people enjoy the sunshine under the same blue sky.

Our service targets include school drop-outs in impoverished regions, solitary elderly people, orphans, single-parent families, low-income handicapped individuals, drug users, HIV/AIDS patients and commercial sex workers, among other vulnerable social groups. Voluntary services organized by our association include free medical services, health lectures, disease prevention education, harm reduction, domestic violence reduction, training in computer skills and other needed areas, meetings and exchanges between donors and aid recipients, coordination of group activities involving members of vulnerable populations, NGOs and civil society groups, and other services in keeping with the Daytop Red Cross Committee's voluntary service project.

In view of this, we promise to undertake that:
1) All Daytop Red Cross funds, whether from domestic or foreign governments, NGOs, social groups, businesses or individual donors will be used to further develop Red Cross projects. Physical assets donated to the committee may, depending on the situation, be sold, with all proceeds going to support Red Cross projects.
2) The Daytop Red Cross will use all its strength to root out corruption in the aid process, eliminate superfluous actions and obstacles and deliver care and services directly to the people who need them.
3) Original records and case files maintained by the Daytop Red Cross will without exception be subject to review, and we invite donors, media organizations and members of the public to supervise our work.
4) Daytop Red Cross accounting information is open and transparent, and will be subjected to a yearly audit by an accredited accounting agency, with the results made public on our website.

The sunshine is dazzling, society is beautiful, life is precious and living is happiness - this is all because of love. It just needs each person giving a little bit of their love, and the world will be more peaceful and beautiful a place. Our hope is that the Daytop Red Cross can gather together the love from all circles of society and use it to help these children finally see the sunshine they have been dreaming of!
