This project was developed initially between Yunnan Daytop and Doctors Without Borders/Holland. It is currently managed by Yunnan Daytop and funded by the China/U.K. Aids Programme. The project's aim is to increase HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and promote safer practices among drug users to control the spread of HIV within the drug-using community. The project trains ex-addicts in the middle or late phases of rehabilitation to work as HIV peer educators. These peer educators conduct participatory HIV/AIDS prevention workshops in detox centers. The project has arranged more than 111 workshops in 10 detox centers and two re-education camps, serving 2,791 drug users spread across Kunming city, Yuxi, Luoping, Chuxiong, and Qujing prefectures. Feedback indicates that each drug user who participated in the workshops discussed the training with at least three peers. So far, this method of spread HIV/AIDS education has made a notable impact at detox centers and other related agencies.
